What are Charter Schools?

Charter schools are independent public, tuition-free  schools that are open to all students. They provide options for parents and students in pursuing the ideal educational experience. Charter schools are operated independently from the traditional school district with the autonomy to design innovative classrooms and teaching methods that fit the needs of their students.

The Facts about Charter Schools?

  • Charter schools are PUBLIC schools. They are tuition-free and open to all students, do not discriminate on any basis, are publicly funded, and are held accountable for meeting all state and federal academic standards.
  • Charter schools are held accountable for their finances by state law. In addition to the same oversight as traditional public law they have an additional level of accountability from their authorizer.
  • Charter school teachers must meet the same requirements as any traditional public school in Michigan.
  • Charter schools do not selectively admit students. There may be a lottery if there are more interested students than available seats, but the selection process is random.
  • Charter schools serve English Learners and students with disabilities. Federal law requires charter schools to comply with all requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the same as a traditional public school.
